💙 Goshikinuma Ponds | The Five-Colored Lakes of Bandai’s Hidden Paradise

Tucked away in the highlands of Fukushima Prefecture lies Goshikinuma (五色沼) — a series of mystical ponds shimmering in hues of blue, green, turquoise, and ruby red.
Formed by a volcanic eruption over a century ago, these lakes are now one of Japan’s most enchanting natural wonders — each one glowing with its own mysterious color.

As you wander the forest trail connecting the ponds, the light shifts and the waters change — from emerald to cobalt, from jade to sapphire.
It feels like walking through a dream painted by nature itself.

🌈 The Magic of Color

The name Goshikinuma means “Five-Colored Ponds,” but in truth there are more than 30 scattered across the lush Bandai Highlands.
The vivid colors come from natural minerals in the water — copper, aluminum, and iron — each reacting with sunlight and seasons in a unique way.

No two visits are ever the same.
Even the same pond can appear deep blue one day, and emerald green the next — a living palette of nature’s chemistry and light.

🌿 The Story of the Lakes

The ponds were born after Mount Bandai’s great eruption in 1888, which reshaped the landscape and blocked rivers to create new lakes.
Over time, the devastated terrain transformed into today’s tranquil forests and colorful ponds — a powerful reminder of nature’s ability to heal and create beauty.

Locals call it “the miracle of Bandai.”
